Local Events for a Dem. St. Patrick's Day weekend
St. Patrick's Day is Monday, March 17th but in Colorado Springs it will be celebrated on Saturday, March 15th. First join the Democrats and an estimated 30,000 locals at around Noon on Tejon Street in the downtown of Colorado Springs. Now even though my paternal name does not reflect it, my maternal side of my heritage is mostly Irish. In fact we can trace my maternal grandmother's branch where her grandmother was the granddaughter of Commodore John Barry of Boston, (not the father of the U.S. Navy, he of Philadelphia). Barry was an Irish immigrant of 1760. My maternal grandmother's grandfather was a refugee from the Irish Famine in 1850's who found his way from Canada in Montpelier VT in 1858 and suddenly marrying the youngest granddaughter of Commodore Barry.
Anyway..... Last year's parade will be remembered for its police riot when the Colorado Spring's police were told mistakenly to remove lawful parade participates for their clothing symbols of peace. It became known as the St. Paddy's Day Seven where they 7 PPJPC members were arrested and later tried for misdemeanor charges of obstruction. The city failed to prove their case and eventually settled. This year the PPJPC will be in the parade and we will be witnessing the freedom of speech making its way down Tejon.
Then in the evening the El Paso County Democratic Party will be hosting a fund-raiser featuring Andrew Romanoff, the Colorado Legislature's Speaker of the House. It is called the 4th annual Shamrock Shillelagh Clam Chowder Marching Society Democrat Fund Raiser. The Event will begin at 7 PM and be housed at the Patty Jewett Golf Clubhouse, located at 900 E. Espanola St. $60.00 donation is required and you can call the Democrat HQ at 473-8713 or visit Peakdems.org.
